Federal and state resources are available to provide financial relief for those affected by this disaster. Here’s a breakdown of the current financial supports you may consider exploring:

IRS Disaster Relief – Filing Deadlines Extended – May 1, 2025

The IRS has extended tax deadlines for individuals and businesses in areas affected by Hurricane Helene. This includes an extension for filing 2023 income tax returns and paying taxes that would have been due this fall. Additionally, if your tax records were lost or damaged during the storm, you can request free replacements of past documents. Currently, taxpayers in the entire states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, and parts of Tennessee and Virginia, who received extensions to file their 2023 returns have until May 1, 2025, to file. Tax-year 2023 tax payments are not eligible for this extension. In addition, May 1 is also the deadline for filing 2024 returns and paying any tax due.

SBA Disaster Loans – Application Deadline 11/27/2024 unless otherwise specified

The Small Business Administration (SBA) offers low-interest disaster loans to help homeowners, renters, businesses, and non-profit organizations recover from Hurricane Helene. These loans are intended to cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other sources.  Note that applying for a loan does not commit you to taking the loan, but getting your application in by the deadline is necessary to qualify.

  • Home Disaster Loans: If you live in a declared disaster area and have experienced damage to your home or personal property, you may be eligible for financial assistance from SBA — even if you do not own a business. As a homeowner, renter, or personal property owner, you may apply to SBA for a loan to help you recover from a disaster.
  • Business Physical Disaster Loans: Businesses of any size may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery, equipment, inventory, and other business assets. Deadline 11/27/2024
  • Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL): For small businesses, agricultural cooperatives, and non-profits that have suffered substantial economic injury, the SBA offers EIDLs to provide necessary working capital to help through the disaster recovery period. Deadline 6/30/2025

How to Apply: You can apply online through the SBA’s secure website or contact their Disaster Assistance Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955.

FEMA Individual Disaster Assistance – Current Deadline 11/27/2024

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) provides direct financial and housing assistance to disaster survivors.

  • Housing Assistance: FEMA offers funds to help repair or replace a damaged home, and rental assistance if you’re unable to stay in your home.
  • Other Needs Assistance (ONA): If you’ve incurred costs for medical, dental, funeral expenses, or essential household items that are not covered by insurance, you may be eligible for assistance through FEMA’s ONA program.

How to Apply: Register with FEMA at disasterassistance.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Make sure to have your insurance information, details of the damage, and proof of your identity when applying.

North Carolina State Relief Programs – Current Deadline 12/9/2024

In addition to federal aid, the state of North Carolina has disaster relief programs available for individuals and businesses affected by Hurricane Helene. These programs include grants, loans, and housing assistance for those who may not qualify for federal aid or need additional support.

  • Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA): If you’ve lost your job or are unable to work due to the disaster, you may qualify for DUA benefits, which provide temporary financial relief for disaster victims who are not eligible for regular unemployment benefits. Deadline 12/9/2024
